Public Relation Officer of the Manya Krobo Traditional Council in the Eastern Region, Nene Asadahor I, has reiterated that it is high time customers of Electricity Company of Ghana (EGC) in the Krobo District allowed the power distributor continue its prepaid metering in the area.
According to the opinion leader, customers cannot resist the national prepaid metering in the area due to an outstanding issue between the youth of the community and the power distributor.
There has been a long existing impasse between the people of Krobo and the power distribution company due to controversial debts as a result of over-billing between 2014 and 2017.
However, on Monday November 22, 2021, a pressure group in the Yilo Krobo and Lower Manya Krobo Municipalities embarked on a demonstration to among other things demand the cancellation of the intended installation of the prepaid meters in the area.
They also called for investigations into the shooting incident that occurred three years ago, and an end to ECG’s operations in the area.
Some agitated youth in the area have since declined the ECG’s intended plans alleging that the ECG move is to punish them.
That notwithstanding, the Assemblyman of Oterkpolu Electoral Area, Ebenezer Teye Narteh, suggested that cancelling all outstanding bills for the people is the only means customers will come to a common understanding to welcome ECG’s prepaid installation.
However, after numerous stakeholder engagements with the ECG, the local authorities came to a conclusion that it was necessary to allow the power distributor perform its core mandates without any hindrances.
“Enough is Enough because ECG, PURC they have been engaging us a lot, not today, about four or five times in connection with this Pre-paid meter over billing and so forth. We have come to a conclusion today so there is no way they can say so, so I’m urging them that it’s a national this thing, it’s a government this thing so there is no way we can say we will not be part of that. ‘They should not bring Pre-paid meter’ who are we to say they should not bring Pre-paid meters? Are we not part of Ghana? We are part of Ghana so enough is enough” Nene stated.
He added that, “if customers have problem with ECG, that shouldn’t prevent them from installing Pre-paid meters to their customers in the district”.
Nene Concluded by urging the ECG to do their work without fear since the exercise has already begun at some parts of Kpong in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality.
He made the statement during a stakeholders engagement between management of the ECG and opinions of the Krobo enclave on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at Krobo Odumase.
