Parliament has suspended its sitting, together with all activities of the house, for Friday, June 10, 2022.

The suspension is to allow for all 275 members of the house to participate in the tree planting exercise scheduled for the day dubbed ‘Green Ghana Day’.

According to the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, lawmakers can travel to their constituencies in the Green Ghana Day Project, which constitutes government’s efforts to recover the lost forest reserve.

President Akufo-Addo, while launching the exercise, under the theme “Mobilizing for a Greener Future”, earlier at the Accra International Conference Centre said that, there has been a sharp decline in Ghana’s forest cover despite it being an important resource to the country.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources thus seeks to mobilize the citizens to plant 10 million seedlings on reserve compartments and 10 million across the country, in schools, places of worship and other public areas.

Addressing a press conference in Parliament on Wednesday June 8, Andrew Asiamah Amoako said “indeed, as you may be aware ,the Speaker has just announced that Parliament will not sit on Friday. This is to enable Members of Parliament travel to their constituencies to lead their constituents in participating in this year’s Green Ghana Day. We want to thank the speaker for this momentous decision. That gives us great impetus and gives us a lot of momentum moving forward to Friday.”

While thanking Speaker Alban Bagbin and MPs for their support towards the exercise, he noted that climate change is reaching a tipping point and Ghana is contributing its quota to the global efforts at halting climate change.
