Awhiam town: Chiefs, residents bemoan water crisis in the area

The chiefs and people of Awhiam, a community in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region, have been hit with acute water shortage.

According to them, the lack of potable water is draining their pockets and exposing the people in the area to unnecessary struggles in their search for water for domestic use.

They have been subjected to various hardships over the years due to the lack of potable drinking water in the community.

Expressing their worry over the problem to Angel News reporter, Augustine Ahiabor, the residents of Awhiam said, they are compelled to buy water on daily basis from private tanks and borehole owners because their only tap barely flows.

The private water suppliers were expensive with a polytank being sold for GH¢60 while the 10 litre gallon popularly known as (Kuffour gallon) goes for 1Gh¢.

A female resident said that has made many families who can not afford the prices of these private water suppliers to resort to the use of the river water and walk several hours to nearby communities for water for their homes, work places or schools.

The situation has impacted the academic performances of students since they spend several hours travelling long distances in search of water, thereby reporting late to school or skipping school altogether.

Madam Hannah Awuah, a caterer at Awhiam Community Day school, also indicated that the water crisis is affecting her duty since she has to queue before getting water to cook for the students.

The Divisional Chief of Ningo Traditional Council, Nene Banahene Tetteh III, described the water shortage as a major problem facing Awhiam Town and its surrounding communities because the only tap in the area flows at night and dawn; a situation he said is worrying since they miss the opportunity to store buckets of water for subsequent usage.

They are therefore appealing to the government and other stakeholders to come to their aid to resolve their problem of water crisis.
