A private Legal Practitioner , Dr. Kweku Paintsil has voiced his disappointment with National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentarians, accusing them of contempt of court following a recent Supreme Court ruling.
Speaking on “Yen Man Ghana” show on the Angel TV hosted by Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante on Saturday, November 9, 2024, Dr. Paintsil criticized the NDC MPs for disrespecting the court’s authority.
According to him, the Supreme Court had ordered that Parliament resume sessions, yet the NDC MPs chose to occupy areas designated for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claiming to be the majority.
Dr. Paintsil emphasized that the court did not sanction this move, and he believes that any refusal to comply with a court order constitutes contempt.
He explained that, contempt can be a tactical weapon and does not require all NDC parliamentarians to be held accountable. He therefore suggested that the court call upon the leader of the minority, Ato Forson, and two other NDC members to represent the party in this matter when they are summoned for contempt.
“The Supreme Court’s order was directed to the NDC parliamentarians. My understanding is that the court ordered those MPs who moved from their designated places to return,” he said.
He further stated that all NDC MPs present during the incident, including the Speaker of Parliament, are guilty of contempt, regardless of whether the Speaker directed them to act otherwise.
Dr. Paintsil praised the NPP MPs for their decision not to attend the parliamentary session after the court’s ruling, stating that their absence prevented potential chaos, given that their designated areas were occupied by NDC members.
“Ghanaians should be thankful to NPP MPs for not showing up in parliament,” he remarked.
