Legendary Black Stars player, Samuel Osei Kuffour, has taken a swipe at former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher, following his recent remarks about the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
It is recalled that Carragher, in his remarks about the Ballon d’Or and Egypt’s and Liverpool’s talisman Mohamed Salah, stated that the latter’s inability to win a “major tournament” – in his view, the Euros, Copa America, or the World Cup – placed the Egyptian forward at a disadvantage in Ballon d’Or voting.
His dismissal of AFCON, the continent’s iconic tournament that holds immense significance for African nations, did not sit well with many, especially former players who graced the occasion with their respective countries.
Following the growing anger the statement generated, Carragher swiftly clarified that he did not intend to be disrespectful.
Adding his voice to the subject, the former Bayern Munich and Ghana defender tore into Jamie Carragher and indicated that he falls short of the world’s top 2,000 defenders.
According to him, Carragher is nothing but an ex-player who talks too much and added that but for his nationality, he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to play for Liverpool.
“What has Jamie Carragher achieved? If he wasn’t born in Liverpool, he would not have had the chance to play for Liverpool. If we mention the best 2,000 defenders in the world, Jamie Carragher will not be part of them. He’s nothing. He just talks. He should be ashamed of himself,” he told Accra-based Sporty FM in an interview.
He added, “Africa has given us the best of the best. Africa has produced a Ballon d’Or winner. Jamie Carragher has to apologise to all African people because AFCON is not a normal tournament.”
