Director of Operations for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Divine Nkrumah, believes that the numerous challenges facing Ghana’s healthcare system are linked to handling the sector with partisanship.
According to him, such condemnable practices retard the development of a nation that seeks progress.
“The reason why we’ve reached here today is because we’ve politicized everything in this country, and that’s what determines our development,” he said.
He raised the concern on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, when discussing what is becoming a norm for Ghanaian politicians seeking medical treatment abroad when they fall sick.
Nkrumah said, “The politicians have turned Ghana into a cemetery ground; they go to seek healthcare abroad, and if they die, they’re brought back to be buried here,” he said with discomfort.
He described the situation as dire, indicating that many hospitals and healthcare facilities are in disarray.
He cited the lack of equipment and basic infrastructure, which has resulted in system failure, linking it as a contributing factor to these healthcare facilities being unable to meet the needs of the Ghanaian populace.
“For instance, the elevator at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has been out of order, and the few machines available are overwhelmed, putting pressure on the already strained healthcare system,” Mr. Nkrumah referenced.
Nkrumah further emphasized that the government’s neglect of public healthcare facilities is evident in the fact that privatized machines are functioning well.
“The machines that have been privatized are doing good, which means it’s intentional,” he said. “It’s because they don’t want to solve the problems for Ghanaians to be comfortable.”
