Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has raised concerns about the rising water levels of the Weija Dam that is likely to threaten the structural integrity of the facility.
A letter signed by Charles K. Tulashie, Regional Chief Manager, GWL stated that the dam is gradually experiencing a rise in water levels and could soon reach a point where immediate controlled spillage would be necessary to avoid any risk of collapse.
“This is to inform you that with the onset of the rains, the Weija Dam is gradually experiencing a rise in its water levels and failure to commence immediate controlled spilling may result in compromising of the structural integrity of the dam,” the letter read.
Although the spillage has not yet started, the company emphasized that preparations are underway to begin spilling at a low rate if necessary. The actual rate of spillage, when initiated, will depend on the continued inflow of water into the dam.
The spillage, once commenced, will be maintained for as long as water levels remain dangerously high, in order to protect the dam and surrounding communities from a possible collapse.
