Ghanaians overlook the responsibility of MPs – Henry Asante

Must Read

The Communications Team Member for Movement for Change, Henry Asante has expressed concern that Ghanaians have lost sight of the fundamental role of a Member of Parliament (MP), which is to make laws.

Speaking during a panel discussion with Saddick Adams on the Angel Morning Show on Thursday April 10, 2025, he emphasized that MPs often make promises during their campaigns to address various issues within their constituencies.

Mr. Asante pointed out that there is often a lack of inquiry into how these promises will be fulfilled.

He expressed that, “If you tell me you will construct roads in my area, how do you plan to do that?” he questioned.

He highlighted that, the common funds allocated for development do not go directly to MPs but are instead managed by the local assembly.

He stressed the importance of addressing this issue, suggesting that public discourse should reflect a clearer understanding of the MPs’ roles.

“We should not make statements that will lead the youth to believe they should go to their MPs’ homes for assistance,” he said.

Reflecting on his own experiences, Mr. Asante recalled witnessing long queues outside the office of Adwoa Safo, prompting him to wonder what those individuals were waiting for.

He recognized that each person had their own unique problems, often stemming from promises made by the MP.

Mr. Asante urged MPs to educate their constituents about the true nature of their responsibilities and to refrain from making unrealistic promises.
