NPP alleges ‘state-sponsored persecution’ of members

Must Read

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding an immediate end to “state-sponsored persecution” of its members by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

The NPP claims the government is engaging in politically motivated harassment and is misusing state security agencies to target its members.

According to the party, these actions directly undermine Ghana’s democracy and the rule of law.

Their call follows widespread reports of the arrest of Alfred Albabio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, an NPP member who was allegedly arrested in a Rambo-style operation at his residence on Friday, May 23, 2025, by individuals believed to be from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Although the NIB has yet to issue an official statement, the NPP alleges that Kumi’s arrest is linked to a recent petition he submitted to President John Mahama, requesting the dissolution of the committee investigating the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

In a related development, the NPP also cited an incident involving armed police officers who reportedly stormed the residence of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, following a summons by the Regional Police Command.

The NPP, in a strongly worded statement, condemned these developments, describing them as part of a deliberate pattern of abuse of power aimed at weakening the opposition.

“Such actions not only violate the fundamental rights of Ghanaian citizens but also endanger the principles of transparency, justice, and equal protection under the law,” the statement read.
