Renowned broadcast journalist, Saddick Adams, has called on government to take urgent action against the alarming spread of unlicensed weapons among Ghanaian youth.
He described the growing trend a serious threat to national security and public safety.
Speaking on Nyansapo, a segment of the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Monday, June 2, 2025, Mr. Adams cited troubling statistics released by the Ghana National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons.
The reports, he indicated, there are four million weapons currently in circulation in Ghana, only 2.3 million are registered. This leaves over one million firearms in the hands of individuals without legal authorization.
According to Adams, towns such as Kpando in the Volta Region, Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, Techiman in the Bono East Region, and Agona Asafo in the Central Region have become hotspots for illegal arms trading, creating a dangerous environment for communities.
“The proliferation of our boarders from other countries that use Ghana as transit point surpass the immigration and where unlicensed weapons are been trade. This has led to increased valence and insecurity in the country. Most young people are turning to become crime, and local communities are living in fear and panic”
He further appealed directly to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and President John Mahama to intensify efforts in cracking down on the illicit arms trade and restoring law and order across affected regions.
Adams emphasized the need for a national strategy that not only targets the supply and possession of illegal weapons but also addresses the root causes.
“If nothing is done, we risk endangering the peace and safety of our society. The youth are our future, and we cannot allow them to be armed and misguided,” he stated.
The hosts of AMS further calls for decisive government intervention with stakeholders coordinating action to disarm the streets and secure the nation’s future.
