A government spokesperson, Godwin Mahama Ayaba, has urged the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to exercise restraints, assuring them that, the government is working diligently to address their concerns.
Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS), on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, he noted that, the government’s willingness to tackle the nurses’ issues, despite its short term in office and various obstacles, showcases its commitment to solving problems.
“I will plead with the nurses to exercise restraint because it has not been long since the government came into power and it has not found its full feet; however, the government is in the mood of negotiating with them.
The NDC government, which Mahama is the leader, has made up his mind to settle every sector of the economy positively so that, everyone gets his or her national cake just as he or she is supposed to get,” he said.
According to Godwin, the government’s engagement with nurses has been constructive, with no criticism from nurses or their leaders about the government’s response to their strike.
“What makes me happy is that, no-one has ever stood somewhere and said that, the government has thrown derogatory remarks to the nurses on strike; and no-one has also said that, leaders of the government have refused to have a meeting with the nurses on strike.
It is even the government who is looking for the heads of the nurses to have a meeting with them; the government has shown good faith in exhibiting that, they are willing to solve the problems of the nurses,” he explained.
He added that, if the government had ignored the nurses’ grievances and refused to engage with their concerns, the nurses would have been fully justified in taking industrial action, including their going on strike.
