The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ablekuma North, Musa Kalamu Adamu, has settled the medical and transport bills for victims of a crash at the Kwashieman traffic lights.
The collision involved a truck carrying onions and a bus transporting church members from Takoradi to Sowutoum for an Easter convention.
Speaking to the media, Mr Adamu said he received a call about the accident and went to the Ablekuma North Polyclinic, where the victims were being treated.
“When I went there they have all been treated and in stable condition so we have to arrange the payment of their medicals for them to be discharged and to transport them to their final destinations,” he stated.
He noted that the Kwashieman problem is primarily a collective re‑engineering issue of the traffic situation indicating that there is a pedestrian overpass on the road, yet pedestrians also often refuse to use it and instead cross the carriageway.
Mr Adamu said the municipality is in discussions with the Urban Roads Department and the Highways Authority to review the road’s re‑engineering to help safeguard the public.
He urged pedestrians to use the overpass and appealed to drivers to observe road safety protocols to prevent such incidents.
“If we are all complying and we use what the destinated place for us to use it don’t think we will be having this issues.
“Whenever those railings are done the trotro drivers always find a way to cut the railings so that they can have access to take their passengers, I think we have to look at the reingeneering over there so that we can safeguard that spot indeed it is a hot spot for us in the municipality which we are aware,” he said.
Mr Adamu added that, having seen the victims’ condition and confirmed they were stable, he arranged payment for their medical care and transport so they could return to their final destinations.
