Traders operating on the streets and central divisions at Lapaz have been given a seven-day deadline to vacate the area or face enforcement action.
According to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on its Facebook page, the warning was issued by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, Accra Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, and Okaikwei North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Christian Tetteh Badger, during a visit to the area.
The AMA noted that authorities aim to decongest Lapaz and restore free movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
AMA Boss, Mr. Allotey emphasized that trading activities must not obstruct pedestrians and vehicles, stating that streets are for vehicular movement, not trading.
“We understand many traders can’t afford shops, but they can’t take over public spaces,” he said.
Traders have been urged to organize themselves and move away from the streets, or face seizure of goods.
The authorities plan to relocate traders to alternative markets, including Niiboi Town, Akweteman, Achimota, Abeka, and Kisseman.
Mr. Badger also disclosed that the Assembly had a long-term plan to relocate Lapaz traders to a proposed 24-hour market to be constructed around the terminal area.
Madam Akweley noted that she prioritizes trader welfare but stressed that activities must not endanger lives or obstruct movement.
“We want to allow them to trade, but ensure free movement of vehicles and persons so we will be safe,” she said.
