The National Peace Council (NPC) is calling for calm amid rising political tensions in the country following the recent arrests of some political actors over purported unlawful public utterances.
The Council stated that, as the statutory body mandated under Act 818 to prevent, manage, and resolve conflict, it deemed it significant to call for calm and restraint from all sides.
This comes in light of the arrest and detention of the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, over charges of alleged offensive conduct and related offenses.
This has sparked dissatisfaction among members of the NPP, who have accused the government of what they describe as political persecution and have gone ahead to petition foreign missions over the development.
In a statement, the Council expressed deep concern about the matter and reminded all Ghanaians that the rule of law, due process, and respect for constitutional rights, as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution, are non-negotiable and the pillars of our democracy. It further advocated for moderation, circumspection, and tolerance by actors in the media and public spaces.
“It is in this vein that we call on our respected Security and Judicial Institutions to act with impartiality, transparency, and professionalism, and ensure that the rights and freedoms of citizens are always upheld in the performance of their lawful duties.
“The National Peace Council, similarly, calls on Political Parties, their Communicators, and Actors to refrain from making unsubstantiated, inflammatory statements and actions that have the potential to incite violence in the country,” parts of the statement issued on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, added.
The Council equally reminded political commentators, both home and abroad, to be mindful of their utterances and their impact on national cohesion and stability, adding that Ghana’s stability depends on our ability to disagree in our public discourse without resorting to abusive language or violence.
“We entreat the citizenry to act with responsibility and civility in accordance with the law,” the Council admonished.
The Council also announced plans to dialogue with the leadership of political parties in the coming days to find lasting solutions to this development and to prevent further escalation of the situation.
