Jay Ghartey has opened up about the inspiration behind his hit song ‘My Lady,’ revealing that the track was born out of prayer and a desire to create a timeless record that would resonate across generations.
Speaking in an interview with DJ Ohemaa Woyeje on Y’adwumanie on Angel FM, the singer recounted how a conversation with his late father motivated him to seek divine inspiration for a breakthrough song.
“I’ve been doing music since I was a kid. One day, I came back to Ghana after my grandmother passed away, and my father asked me, ‘Jay, what’s up? Why is it always underground? We don’t hear from you, we don’t hear the big tunes,’” he recalled.
According to Jay Ghartey, his father’s words challenged him to take his music career to the next level.
“ I went home and prayed. I said, ‘God, just give me one song that everybody can vibe with, one that will last forever.’ I kept praying, and He gave me My Lady,” he said.
The musician noted that the song continues to enjoy widespread appeal years after its release, particularly among younger listeners who were not around when it first hit the airwaves.
“It’s for the youth out there and for the generation that wasn’t around when I released it. They still love it today. It’s an evergreen song,” he added.
Jay Ghartey also revealed that he was caught off guard by the song’s massive success, especially its popularity outside Ghana.
“I was surprised when My Lady became a hit. We released it in Ghana first, but it gained momentum in New York, and my first show there sold out,” he disclosed
