Aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Awentami Afoko, has declared his commitment to lead the party’s renewal efforts, saying he never abandoned the NPP despite his past suspension.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, Mr. Afoko said he continued to support candidates and constituencies even after his suspension, and maintained hope for the party’s revival.
“I never abandoned the NPP. Even after my suspension, I continued to support candidates and constituencies. I continued to believe in this party. I continued to hope for its renewal,” he stated.
“Today, I say with humility that what we started then, we can do again and we can do it better. The NPP must return to power,” he added.
Mr. Afoko outlined a plan centered on strengthening the party from the grassroots, urging the NPP to return power to its structures.
“The NPP must return power to in-structures. We must strengthen polling stations, electoral areas, constituencies. We must give Regional Executives the tools to work,” he said.
He also called for improved communication within the party, stressing that it must flow both ways.
“We must ensure that the party communication is not only from Accra to the regions but from the grassroots up to the national leadership.”
The aspiring chairman said if given the mandate, he would serve as a team player and a unifier.
“As the national chairman, I’ll be a team player, but at the same time, I’ll be a field commander, a reconciler, an organiser, a fund-raiser, a disciplinarian, a listener and a servant of the party,” Mr. Afoko pledged.
He argued that the NPP has a “unique opportunity to return to government” if it does the right things internally.
Mr. Afoko tied the party’s fortunes to the needs of Ghanaians, saying the country requires stability and support for enterprise.
“Ghana remains a country of enterprise, talent and ambition. Our people want jobs, our traders want to live, our businesses want stability and our farmers want support,” he said.
“We must recapture power,” he added.
