President John Dramani Mahama, on Saturday, August 1, 2026, commissioned the refurbished Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and received the historic first consignment of Jubilee Crude for local refining.
The landmark ceremony, held at the forecourt of the Tema Oil Refinery, marks a major step toward reviving strategic state institutions and building a self-reliant economy.
Addressing stakeholders, President Mahama said the refinery has already processed 2 million barrels of crude into a wide range of refined petroleum products.
He noted that as the government implements the 24-hour economy initiative and the accelerated export development program, institutions such as TOR will play an “increasingly central role in expanding industrial production.”
“The revival of TOR demonstrates that Ghana can rebuild its strategic institutions, add value to its resources, and chart a path for sustainable prosperity,” the President said.
President Mahama emphasized that the renewed operations at TOR align with his administration’s broader vision for industrial reform.
He expressed hope that the facility will “continue to power Ghana’s industrial reform and continue to contribute to a stronger, more prosperous and self-reliant vision.”
The commissioning of the refurbished CDU is expected to boost TOR’s capacity to process local crude, reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported refined products, save foreign exchange, and create jobs.
