The Coalition of Concerned Nurses and Midwives’ trainees says no single batch of its trainees has received full payment. since the restoration of the allowance in 2017, contrary to a recent statement made by the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who is also the flagbearer for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming General Elections, recently on a campaign tour of the North East Region, told trainee nurses that the NPP administration has been committed to restoring their allowance and has been consistent with its payment.

However, the trainee nurses in a statement issued Wednesday, May 15, 2024, say the government owes them arrears stemming from 92 months.

“While the Vice President has touted the government’s commitment to restoring and maintaining trainees’ allowances, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

“Approximately 30% of trainees have never received any allowances at all. And after Completion, trainees do not stand any chance of receiving their arrears owed by government as there is no arrangement put in place for that since the restoration of allowance evidence by many trainees who completed without allowance and has never been paid their arrears since,” the statement explained.

The coalition thus describe the situation as “untenable and unacceptable” noting that the various batches are facing significant financial hardships due to the non-payment of their allowances.

It urged the government to pay the arrears owed them, including those who have completed school, to reduce the financial constraints they are going through.
