‘I don’t understand why I don’t get TGMA nominations’ – Sister Afia

Ghanaian musician, Francisca Gawugah popularly know as Sista Afia by stage name, has expressed discontent over the lack of award nominations despite her consistent efforts and yearly submissions.

Speaking in an interview on Angel FM’s “Y’aduma Nie” programme in Angel 102.9 FM with Ohemaa Woyeje, Sista Afia shared her concerns and frustrations regarding the nomination process for the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

“I don’t understand why I haven’t been getting nominations,” she remarked. “Every year, I submit my work and do my part, yet I’m not recognised.”

Sista Afia hinted that the award process might be subjective, saying, “the award is managed by someone, and it’s not like it belongs to my family. Whatever decisions they make are entirely up to them.”

She disclosed that she had a discussion with the public relations team from Charterhouse, the organisers of the awards, to understand why her song “Asuoden” wasn’t nominated.

“My point was that ‘Asuoden’ was a very popular song. We submitted it for nominations, hoping to get recognition but we didn’t receive any nominations, not even one. That’s where my concern arises.”

Sista Afia further explained that the Charterhouse PR team told her that “Asuoden” was released at a time that did not fit within the nomination period for that year. However, she found this explanation lacking, as she observed that many other artists who released songs around the same time still received nominations.

Reflecting on the situation, Sista Afia concluded, “It seems to be their own criteria or scheme. Next time, we will try to release our songs at what they consider the right time and see what happens.”

The 25th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, hosted by Charterhouse on June 1, 2024, saw dancehall artist Stonebwoy taking home the top prize. Legendary Highlife Artiste Amakye Dede received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the music industry. Attendees enjoyed a night of high-energy performances and glamourous attire.
