The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Samuel Pyne has cautioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop using their past experiences with Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh to judge his competence.
The Energy Minister has been nominated by the flagbearer of the NPP to be his running mate for the 2024 elections. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been on a tour introducing NAPO to some leading members of the NPP.
There have however been some disagreements with the choice of the Energy Minister; Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi for instance has claimed he would have preferred another candidate.
“If it were up to me to choose, I wouldn’t choose him. He is not my preference. ‘Appiah-Kubi is saying that he is not my preference’, but that doesn’t mean he is not qualified.”
“I would want somebody who would be open with the people on the ground, who would be able to deliver the votes, who would submit to the presidency, and who would be important in bringing Parliament closer to the executive”, Hon. Appiah-Kubi stated.
Also, a hitherto unknown group marched to Dr. Bawumia’s campaign office in Kumasi to request a running mate who embodies humility and approachability for the Party’s Flagbearer.
The demonstrators calling themselves the Concerned NPP Grassroot and Executives Group called on the NEC not to endorse the nomination of Napo as the Party’s running mate for the December 7 elections.
Commenting on these disagreements on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo which was monitored by Angelonline.com.gh, Sam Pyne said he has failed to comprehend the reason behind the disagreements.
“Since when did this become our party tradition?”, he questioned, stressing the party has structures and any person who has disagreements must use the appropriate forum to address his or her concerns.
He however cautioned the naysayers, stating “the party’s decision is binding on every party member”, hence should the National Council, on Thursday, July 4, accept NAPO as Running Mate, everyone within the party including Andy Appiah-Kubi will have to fall in line.
“We are not even looking at his ability to do the work. We are not looking at politically what is he bringing on board”, he shared his disappointment.
