Organised Labour has announced a nationwide strike on October 10, 2024, in response to the government’s failure to address their concerns about illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

During an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, October 10, the group expressed its dissatisfaction with the government’s inaction on the issue.

Organised Labour had previously set a deadline for the end of September, urging the government to take strong action against illegal mining, which they argue is harming both the environment and the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.

In a statement, Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the TUC, said, “With the deadline now past and the government still not meeting our demands on illegal mining, Organised Labour has decided to initiate a nationwide strike effective October 10, 2024.”

He urged all workers to remain home starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, as a form of protest to push the government into taking immediate steps to tackle illegal mining.
