New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has affirmed the New Patriotic Party suffered gravely due to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s fight against galamsey prior to the 2020 elections.

The President pledged to put his Presidency on the line to curb the galamsey menace, hence set up an operation to clamp down on the illegal miners.

Military officers were deployed to galamsey sites to stop the illegal miners but galamsey has today become another topical issue due to the excessive contamination of the water bodies and environment.

There is currently mounting pressure on President Nana Akufo-Addo to stop the menace less than two months to the elections with some individuals going on demonstration, UTAG staging a strike and Organized Labour first threatening a strike action but subseqently cancelling their intended plan.

As galamsey continues to become a matter of concern to Ghanaians, there are claims that the ruling party lost majority of their parliamentary seats in the mining areas but this has been consumed by a section of the public with doubts.

Speaking in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi onPeace FM, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly called “NAPO”, disclosed that the New Patriotic Party “paid the price” for fighting against galamsey.

“Truthfully, it cost the NPP over 20 seats in the 2020 election,” he revealed, stressing, “this is why Nana Addo won the 2020 election by 500,000 votes but Parliament became a tie. I have been a Director of Election and I am telling you the effects of Nana Addo’s relentless pursuit of illegal mining cost NPP votes and parliamentary seats”.
