ABN climaxes 2024 Breast Cancer Awareness Month with free screening

Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN), one of Ghana’s biggest media firms, has organized a successful breast cancer screening for its audience that were largely residents of the Accra metropolis.

The exercise, which was held at the station’s premises at Lapaz-Nyamekye on Thursday, October 31, 2024, was offered free breast cancer screening, blood pressure and other illnesses to the patrons.

The program aimd to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and to provide accessible screening services to women in the region.

The initiative includes a series of in-house programs, free breast screening events, and partnerships with healthcare providers drawing a significant crowd of participants eager to make a difference in cancer awareness.

The Japan Medical Center based in Joma, Ablekuma in the Ga Central Assembly, offered the free breast screening to women, particularly those who may not have access to regular healthcare services.

In addition to the screenings, ABN provided educational resources through its broadcasting channels and other platforms.

There were series of informative programs that covered topics such as risk factors, screening options and the importance of self-examinations.

Speaking to Angelonline.com.gh, Nancy Ama Mesiwotso Tseyi, the programmes manager of Angel TV was overwhelmed by the massive turn-out and added that the timely exercise aligns with the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is globally observed every October.

She noted that breast cancer has become a menace in Ghanaian society and globally hence the need to create awareness and educate the audience, helping them understand that the disease is curable when detected early.

“We have done it in the past and there was a break, and then last year we resurrected it, we have done this year and God willing next year it will be done. We wouldn’t want to wait until we get pink October only.

“It is an education that we would be championing once a while to only remember ourselves as women that there is something that is claiming lives so we [ABN] will continue the fight everyday, everytime and anyday,” Madam Tseyi pledged.

The Japan Medical Center who provided the screening service to the people, stressed the importance of self-examination and regular screenings, especially for the aged women.

A health practitioner of the facility, Joshualyn Fosua Mensah expressed that the exercise was very thoughtful, especially in helping the participants detect their breast cancer status.

She highlighted the need for women to embrace breast cancer screening whenever the opportunity comes, ideally twice a year, and suggested that “when you examine your breasts and detect anything unusual, it can help save your life.”

“I am very happy that you have organized this program,” she expressed and commended the gesture of the Angel Broadcasting Network.

Hundreds of women who attended the breast screening expressed relief and gratitude for having access to such services free of charge and the opportunity to know their health status.

A beneficiary said “When I came, they checked my blood pressure and examined my blood. After that, they asked me to lie down and check my breasts.

“I had the same thing happen to me. They did my checkup, and everything went smoothly. I’m okay,” another beneficiary stated.

According to them, they were encouraged and advised by the health experts to prioritize their health by checking their breasts “monthly.”
