The National Youth Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has formally retracted allegations made against Prof. Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana.
On October 28, 2024, Mustapha released a statement accusing Prof. Gyampo of using a University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) strike action to politically influence students on behalf of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He also alleged that Prof. Gyampo sought potential political appointment from the NDC and defamed his character by claiming he had “an international reputation for sleeping with students and changing their grades.”
After engaging with Prof. Gyampo’s legal team, Mustapha was made aware of the defamatory nature of these claims.
Acknowledging his error, he issued a retraction, stating, “Given that I have no evidence to back the allegations I made against Prof. Gyampo, I hereby retract and render an unqualified apology to him.”
In his apology, Mustapha emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the retraction is given the same level of publicity as the original statement.
“I am causing this retraction and apology to be published and be given the same prominence by all the media outlets that carried the contents of my Press Statement,” he declared, acknowledging the potential damage caused by the allegations.
