The Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar has expressed disappointment in the former President, John Mahama labelling as a man who lacks principles and a threat to Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking on Angel Morning Show on Tuesday, the Minister cited Mahama’s claim of Akufo-Addo undermining state institutions, specifically the court system, the Electoral Commission and the Audit Service during a recent democracy and governance lecture to buttress her point.

According to her, John Mahama did not provide any evidence to support allegations he made against these institutions.

Fatimatu further explained that in 2016, Mahama claimed that the Electoral Commission (EC) could not influence the outcome of elections and that the EC should be allowed to do its work without political interference.

She noted that despite the unchanged electoral system since Mahama’s tenure, he now expresses distrust in the Electoral Commission ahead of the 2024 elections.

According to her, Mahama accused the Ghanaian court system of being undermined, alleging that President Akufo-Addo has appointed New Patriotic Party (NPP) judges. She pointed out that Mahama himself appointed judges with political histories and, when those judges ruled against him in the 2020 presidential election petition causing him to incite NDC supporters to insult the courts.

“In 2015, Mahama promoted two judges to the Supreme Court, Justice Gabriel Pwamang who was the General Secretary of the PNC, and Justice Appau, who was the Brong Ahafo Deputy Secretary under the PNDC. Mahama saw nothing wrong with this, even though those same judges sat on the 2020 general election petition.” she added.

She further stated that Mr Mahama has not demonstrated the qualities of a statesman.

“NDC recently requested a forensic audit during the IPAC meeting, but when asked for evidence to justify this request, they organized demonstrations against the Electoral Commission in every regional capital in Ghana,” she concluded.
