Alban Bagbin has earned commendation for his commitment to upholding the integrity of Parliament during a challenging time.
Nana Yaw Sarpong, Aide to Alan Kyerematen, stated that without Bagbin’s steadfast leadership, Parliament might not be functioning as effectively as it is today.
Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Thursday, November 7, 2024, Sarpong highlighted the essential role of Parliament as an independent arm of government, with its powers clearly outlined by the constitution.
“Parliament is a separate arm of government, and the constitution defines its responsibilities and boundaries very clearly,” he said.
Sarpong then addressed recent tensions between Parliament and the Supreme Court, referencing Speaker Bagbin’s declaration of a vacancy in a parliamentary seat.
This decision was later challenged by the Supreme Court, which ruled against it. However, Speaker Bagbin stood by his declaration, creating a legal deadlock that remains unresolved.
Sarpong explained that Bagbin’s decision was grounded in his duty to safeguard parliamentary autonomy, despite the ongoing legal battle.
“What we’re witnessing now is an attempt to interfere with the work and independence of Parliament,” Sarpong noted, expressing concern over what he described as a coordinated effort to undermine the legislature’s authority.
He further elaborated that if Parliament is required to revisit or revise any Supreme Court ruling on this matter, it would necessitate a formal sitting to deliberate and take action accordingly.
In his view, Speaker Bagbin’s approach has been vital in defending the principles of parliamentary independence and preserving the separation of powers.
