The presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to establish a new national theatre in Kumasi if elected in the upcoming 2024 elections.

This promise was made during a meeting with members of the creative industry in Kumasi on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.

During his address, Mahama emphasized that building a second National Theatre in Ghana has been a long standing commitment of the NDC, first outlined in the party’s 2020 manifesto.

He assured that the NDC remains dedicated to this promise and will follow through if given the mandate in the 2024 elections.

“In our 2020 manifesto, we committed to building Ghana’s second National Theatre in Kumasi. We stand by that promise, and I assure you that if we come into power, we will make it a reality,” Mahama stated.

The former president also highlighted the deteriorating state of the current National Theatre in Accra, which has served the nation since its construction during the Rawlings administration with support from China. He noted the urgent need for rehabilitation.

“The National Theatre has not undergone any significant renovation since it was built. There are many issues—curtains that won’t close, a damaged stage, and overall wear and tear. It’s high time we rehabilitate this landmark to better support our creative sector,” he lamented.

Mahama further explained that the proposed theatre in Kumasi will be equipped with modern facilities to foster growth in the creative industry, addressing a critical need for advanced infrastructure.

He urged stakeholders to consider the NDC’s commitment to “Resetting Ghana” and transforming the creative industry, underscoring the importance of voting the NDC into power in 2024 to realize this vision.
