The Otutu Abrempong Asona Royal Family in Akropong, within the Akuapem Traditional Area, has emphatically declared that the Otutu Abrempong Stool (Tufohene throne) remains vacant following the demise of the late Tufohene, Nana Korankye Bediatuo II.

The family has refuted claims of the installation of a new chief as a successor to the late ruler, who served as Tufohene for 31 years until his death.

The Asona Royal Family consists of four gates: Adwoa Owusua, Offeibea Asiamah, Abena Ofosua, and Yerinkyiwaa Akwafo, all of whom are entitled to the succession of the Tufohene throne.

The late Nana Korankye Bediatuo II, who was enstooled as Tufohene in May 1993, passed away in February 2024, leaving the Otutu Abrempong Stool vacant. Since his passing, tension has escalated over who should succeed him.

In August 2024, seven months after his death, reports of the enstoolment of a new Tufohene emerged, sparking controversy and raising concerns within the royal family and the community.

At a press conference, representatives from three of the four gates of the Asona Royal Family, excluding the Yerinkyiwaa Akwafo family, dismissed the purported enstoolment of a new Tufohene as invalid.

Expressing disappointment, he accused the Okuapeman Tufohemaa (Queen Mother), Nana Yerinkyiwaa Akwafo I, who belongs to the Yerinkyiwaa Akwafo family, along with some sub-chiefs, of orchestrating the controversial installation.

Mr. Asare appealed to the Okuapemanhene, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, the Overlord of the Akuapem Traditional Area, to intervene urgently to resolve the brewing tension among the four family gates over the succession of the Tufohene throne.

He stressed that Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III’s intervention would not only restore peace but also preserve harmony in Okuapeman and its surrounding communities, he appealed as reported by Jaman Dehyee Opambour.

In response to the allegations, the Okuapeman Tufohemaa, Nana Yerinkyiwaa Akwafo I, acknowledged her knowledge of the installation but clarified that she did not personally make the decision.

She explained that one of the factions had presented the candidate to her, and she had performed the necessary checks before proceeding with the installation.
