Former Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Fuseini Issah, has justified the assertive approach of Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, at the ongoing vetting of ministerial nominees.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Issah addressed concerns raised by some individuals who accused Afenyo-Markin of being overly aggressive during the proceedings.

Defending Afenyo-Markin’s approach, Issah emphasized the critical role of the Minority Leader in safeguarding the interests of his party, particularly given the current parliamentary dynamics.

“As Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin is expected to represent his party with vigor, especially considering the numbers in Parliament. He has to stand firm for us,” Issah remarked.

Reflecting on the performance of first-time Members of Parliament, Issah expressed admiration for their contributions during the vetting process. “Even the first-timers have shown great capacity and relevance. I’m very impressed with their performance so far,” he noted.

Issah also highlighted the importance of robust scrutiny in the vetting process, stating that it is essential for strengthening democracy. Comparing the current vetting to past sessions, he argued that Afenyo-Markin’s line of questioning was not out of place. “When you look at previous vettings, such as that of Fiifi Kwetey and others, the questions have always been tough. Afenyo-Markin’s stance is no different,” he explained.

He further noted that Ghana is making significant progress in its vetting process, but suggested that the country could draw lessons from other democracies. “In the United States, for instance, vetting can take up to three days for thorough deliberations. Ghana is moving forward, but we can learn to make the process even better,” he said.
