The General Secretary of the Ghana Toll Workers Union (GTWU), Edward Duncan, has condemned the decision by the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to cancel road tolls.

During a phone-in interview on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, hosted by Saddick Adams, Mr. Duncan explained that the NPP’s needless decision led to the unemployment of many.

He believes that this decision has created significant challenges for Ghanaians.

“We have close to 800 workers across the country, and when they said they would reintroduce the road tolls, this could create many job opportunities for some Ghanaians. We are happy that the finance minister has also confirmed it; however, this could reduce employment in the country. The cancellation of road tolls by the NPP government is unnecessary,” he stated.

Mr. Duncan asserted that members of the NPP, including those from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were against the decision to cancel the road tolls in the country.

However, the NDC promised to reintroduce the tolls, and they are pleased to hear such good news from Minister-designate Cassiel Ato Forson regarding their reintroduction.

According to him, before the 2024 general election, they had the opportunity to meet President John Mahama and discuss their grievances.

“We use the same money to maintain our roads. You can see that most of our roads are not in good condition; they can’t fix the potholes or weed the roadsides. This has brought many challenges to the state,” he explained.
