Roads and Highways Minister-Designate, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has disclosed the government plans to ditilise the collection of road tolls.

Speaking before the Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20, 2025, Mr. Agboza, while expressing the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) commitment to reintroduce the toll which was canceled by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He explained further that it would do away with the physical barriers to prevent the traffic congestion on the various roads.

Mr. Agbodza added that the new system would be fair and efficient, addressing the concerns of both road users and contractors while ensuring that road infrastructure projects receive the necessary funding.

The minister-designate’s remarks follow his description as “illegality” the decision of the opposition party to scrap the road toll while in power, indicating the NPP failed to listen to the advice provided by the then Minority members on the Roads and Highways Committee.

“We decided to caution the government not to cancel road tolls but to find a way to improve the system,” he told the committee.

He noted that rather than cancelling the collection, the previous government should have improved the leakages to make it better rather than cancelling it.
