‘You can’t be a Catholic and a Freemason at the same time’ – Catholic Bishop

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra has reiterated its opposition to Freemasonry, highlighting the fact that Catholics cannot join Masonic organisations.

In a recent statement signed by Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, the Church clarified that no individual can be both a true Catholic and a Freemason.

“Declaration on Masonic Associations, Masonic principles are irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church,” he said.

He also warned that Catholics who join Masonic associations commit a grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion, as Freemasonry does not only contradict key teachings of the Catholic faith but also that of Christ.

Freemasonry, he added, places Jesus Christ on the same level as other figures such as Buddha and Krishna and omits Christian prayers in its rituals.

The Archbishop who quoted from Proverbs 22:6, urged Catholics, particularly young adults, to seek guidance from the Church and resist associations that misrepresent Freemasonry as acceptable.

“No one can serve two masters,” he said while cautioning that Freemasonry undermines Christianity and the values of the Catholic Church.
