The President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has called on the new Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to address all forms of unethical behavior, from bribery to abuse of power.

According to Mr. Mahama, one critical area that requires immediate attention is the relationship between the police service and the communities they serve.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the new Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, at the presidency on March 14, 2025, the President stated that public trust in law enforcement is essential. He added that without trust, effective policing becomes difficult.

He emphasized that the concept of community policing must be strengthened, explaining that the police should not be seen as an intimidating force but as partners in crime prevention, safety, and development.

President Mahama further stated that officers who serve and protect with empathy, fairness, and respect for human rights earn the respect of society.

He also explained that the new IGP’s role will involve rooting out corruption within the service, noting that corruption in law enforcement undermines justice and weakens public confidence in security agencies.

He stressed the need to take firm action against unethical practices, stating:

“It is crucial that all forms of unethical behavior, from bribery to the abuse of power, are decisively dealt with. We must build a service that is respected both locally and internationally for its professionalism and integrity.”
