The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has indicated that more than 100 streetlights in the metropolis have been restored to illuminate various stretches of the capital.
According to the minister, 126 streetlights across the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region have been made operational following repairs during her first 50 days in office.
She noted that this milestone is a step towards fulfilling her pledge to improve lighting in Accra, ensuring that about 70% of streetlights on major roads and streets in the region are fixed and fully operational.
Speaking at a media briefing after an assessment tour, Madam Ocloo stated that achieving this target was made possible through collaboration with all 29 MMDAs in the region, which were tasked with identifying malfunctioning streetlights on streets and highways for repairs.
She highlighted that a dedicated monitoring team was established at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to oversee the progress and ensure efficiency in the initiative.
“I am pleased to report that significant progress has been made. In all, about 126 streets have been worked on, including some highways, town roads, and community roads across all the 29 MMDAs in the region.
“I must mention that the Tema Motorway and the Accra-Tema Beach Road, which are of great concern to the general public, could not be lighted because of the ongoing construction works,” she announced on Tuesday, March 25, while marking her 50 days in office.
Listing some of the roads where streetlights have been restored, the minister mentioned: the George Bush Highway, 28th February Road, Starlet 91 Road, Independence Avenue (Jubilee House Road), Atta Mills Highway – Fire Service Training School, Newtown-Pig Farm Road, Odorgonno Highway and just to mention a few.
However, she added “I must mention that the Tema Motorway and the Accra-Tema Beach Road, which is of great concern to the general public, could not be lighted because of the ongoing construction works,” the Member of Parliament for Shai Osudoku reiterated.
