The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a reversion to the traditional academic calendar structure for basic schools, beginning with the 2025/2026 academic year.

According to a statement signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at the GES, the approved calendar applies to Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools nationwide.

The change marks a return to the three-term system, which had been disrupted by pandemic-related adjustments in recent years.

GES said the academic year will begin with the first term on 2nd September 2025 and run until 18th December 2025. The second term resumes on 8th January 2026 and ends on 1st April 2026.

The third term starts on 21st April 2026 and concludes on 23rd July 2026, with  two-day mid-term break is scheduled in each term.

Per this, the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is slated for 4th to 11th May 2026.

“GES wishes to reminds all stakeholders that public holidays within the academic year are to be observed accordingly,” the release stated.
