Residents of Abura Asebu Kwamankese (AAK) Constituency have demanded that Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson prioritises funding for their crumbling road networks in the 2026 mid-year budget review presented to Parliament on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
Traders, drivers, and local leaders in Obokor and surrounding communities say unsafe, unpaved roads have forced commercial drivers to hike fares, worsening the cost of living for commuters and small-scale farmers.
Led by Assembly Member for Obokor-Kwaman Electoral Area, Stephen York, protesters staged a peaceful demonstration to call for the comprehensive repair and upgrade of Obokor roads to be captured in the national budget.
York warned the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, Felix Ofosu Kwakye and the District Chief Executive (DCE) that if no budgetary provision is made, residents will unite and vote against the incumbent political parties in the 2028 elections.
“This underscores the depth of our discontent and our determination to use our democratic power to effect change,” he stated.
Chiefs and the Queen Mother of Abura Obokor, who joined the protest, said the action was not politically motivated but a desperate call for essential public services.
The residents also called on drivers to reduce fares “by force” from the current GHS 10 to the normal GHS 6, describing the current charges as unaffordable.
Authorities are monitoring the situation as the community awaits an official government response.
