Nineteen passengers have been hospitalised following a collision between two buses on the Senya Bonsuaku highway in the Awutu Senya West District.
Four of these individuals are in critical condition and are currently receiving treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, around 4 a.m., involving two sprinter buses.
According to reports, one bus, with registration number GR: 5137-18, was travelling from Kasoa to Senya Bereku, while the other, bearing registration number AC: 804-14, was making the journey from Senya Bereku back to Kasoa.
Eyewitness Mr. Kennedy Ewuah described the scene, stating that the bus from Kasoa was transporting foodstuffs along with one passenger, while the other bus was fully loaded with passengers heading in the opposite direction.
He noted that the driver of the food-laden bus lost control due to poor visibility caused by overcast weather, which ultimately led to the devastating collision.
“The sprinter bus was coming from Kasoa and was carrying foodstuffs and a passenger, while the other bus was also loaded with passengers from Senya Bereku heading towards Kasoa.
“The driver of the bus carrying foodstuffs lost control due to the cloudy weather, which led to the fatal collision of the two buses,” he explained.
Mr. Ewuah further indicated that both drivers were trapped in their vehicle with severe leg injuries and required immediate assistance from local residents to be transported to the trauma and specialist hospital.
Meanwhile, the Senya Bereku District Police Commander, DSP Kingsley Asante, confirmed that a total of 19 individuals were involved in the accident, with four in critical condition receiving treatment at Winneba Trauma Hospital. Others have been referred to Hope Christian Hospital and Senya Polyclinic for further care.
In light of this unfortunate incident, DSP Asante urged drivers to exercise caution when navigating the roads, particularly during adverse weather conditions, to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
