The Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed that the officer captured on video assaulting a journalist during the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run, has been formally charged with assault.
In a release signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the Police indicated that investigations are well underway following violent incidents recorded during the by-election on Friday, July 11, 2025.
“The Police have reviewed and are analyzing several videos that captured the incidents at the polling stations to identify all persons involved,” the statement said.
It further revealed that statements have been obtained from complainants and witnesses, and vital leads are being pursued.
“The command has progressed to obtain statements from complainants and witnesses to aid in the ongoing investigations,” it stated.
The statement confirmed that the Police Officer captured in one of the videos assaulting a journalist, who had already been interdicted, is now facing criminal charges.
“In line with due process, the Police Officer captured in one of the videos, assaulting a journalist who was interdicted, has been held for criminal charges of assault,” the command disclosed.
According to the Police, victim of the incident have been issued medical report forms to facilitate further medical attention and documentation of injuries
Superintendent Obeng reiterated the service’s determination to ensure justice for all acts of electoral violence or misconduct.
“The Accra Regional Police Command reiterates its commitment to ensuring that all persons responsible for acts of violence, intimidation, or misconduct during the elections will be held accountable under the law.”
