The Forestry Commission has initiated investigations into allegations of harassment and extortion at the Sokoban Wood Village following widespread media coverage.
In a rejoinder issued by its Corporate Affairs & Media Relations Unit, the Commission acknowledged the public concern and confirmed that it has invited stakeholders.
They included members of the Sokoban Wood Village, executives of the Domestic Lumber Traders Association (DOLTA), and the Domestic Lumber Millers Association of Ghana (DOLMAG) to a meeting scheduled for Friday, July 25, 2025 at the Commission’s headquarters in Accra.
“The Forestry Commission is investigating the issues raised and has invited members of the Sokoban Wood Village, the executives of DOLTA and DOLMAG among others for a meeting… to address the issues,” the statement read.
The Commission also noted that a prior engagement had been held on May 12, during which concerns raised by the group were addressed. A committee was subsequently established to implement resolutions reached at that meeting.
“The Forestry Commission engaged members and executives of the Sokoban Wood Village where some concerns raised were addressed to the satisfaction of the group,” the statement said, adding that ongoing efforts are being made to uphold the outcomes of that engagement.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and resolution, the Commission emphasized;
“Through effective consultation and dialogue, the issues raised will be resolved amicably in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.”
The Commission concluded by assuring the public of its dedication to fostering constructive partnerships with stakeholders in the timber industry.
