The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Armah Kofi Buah, says government has revoked 55 small-scale mining licenses and is currently reviewing 907 others as part of efforts to sanitize the sector and strengthen the fight against illegal mining.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series held at the Presidency on Wednesday July 23, 2025, the Minister revealed that 55 small-scale mining licenses issued during the transitional period were revoked earlier this year.

In addition, he disclosed that 907 out of 1,278 licenses are currently under review by the Small-Scale Mining Review Committee due to irregularities uncovered in the issuance process.

A similar exercise, he noted, is ongoing to scrutinize large-scale mining licenses to ensure full compliance with legal and environmental standards.

“These measures are aimed at sanitizing the mining sector to ensure transparency, fairness, and sustainable operations,” Mr. Buah stated.

He emphasized that under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, the government is engaging stakeholders including traditional authorities, civil society groups, and academia to reform the sector through a comprehensive review of the Minerals and Mining Act.

According to the Minister, the ongoing reforms are intended to correct the imbalances of the past and secure a brighter and more responsible future for all Ghanaians.
