The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has officially scheduled a by-election in the Akwatia Constituency for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the passing of the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Ernest Kumi.
In a statement released on July 30, the Commission indicated that the parliamentary seat has become vacant and, in accordance with Article 112(5) of the Constitution, a by-election will be held to elect a new representative for the constituency.
The Commission further announced that it will receive nominations from prospective parliamentary candidates from Monday, August 11, to Wednesday, August 13, 2025. Nominations are to be submitted at the Denkyembour District Office of the EC between the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.
Thus, interested candidates, are required to download nomination forms from the Commission’s official website (www.ec.gov.gh) starting July 30 through to August 13.
According to the EC, completed forms must be submitted personally by the candidate or through their proposer or seconder. Each nomination must be supported by 20 registered voters in the constituency, two serving as proposer and seconder, and 18 as assenting supporters.
Also, candidates must provide two recent postcard-sized photographs taken against a red background, and endorse their consent to the nomination.
According to the EC, the filing fee has been pegged at GHC10,000. However, female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GHC7,500.
“All completed nominations forms are expected to be delivered in quadruplicate,” the EC indicated.
The Commission urged all interested persons and stakeholders to take note of the timelines and procedures, assuring the public of its commitment to transparency, fairness, and integrity in the conduct of the by-election.
