The Ministry of the Interior has officially announced that Monday, August 4, 2025, will not be observed as a public holiday, contrary to public speculation.

In a statement released Thursday, July 31, 2025, the Ministry cited the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Act, 2025.

The ministry emphasized that only dates listed in the officially approved holiday calendar are to be recognized as statutory holidays.

The clarification comes in response to widespread suggestions that August 4 would be a holiday due to its previous celebration as Founders’ Day.

However, the Ministry refuted this, stating: “Please be informed that 4th August is not a public holiday,” it said in a caption accompanying a statement highlighting all recognized public holidays.

The Ministry urged all citizens, businesses, and institutions to take note and go about their normal activities on that faithful day.

Recalled that August 4th was previously mark as Founder’s Day to commemorate the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), as part of reforms by the then Akufo-Addo government.

However, the current government removed the holiday following a legislative changes earlier this year.

In June 2025, Parliament passed the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, reversing reforms introduced by the previous administration and reinstated September 21, the birthday of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as the official Founders’ Day.
