The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has praised the Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) for embarking on a 10-day intensive maintenance exercise at the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant in the Western Region.

The exercise, which began on August 16 and is expected to end on August 26, involves critical replacement and servicing of equipment, some of which are being undertaken for the first time since the plant was commissioned.

Mr. Jinapor, who visited the facility on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, to inspect progress, commended management and staff for their dedication.

He noted that the plant is operating around the clock to complete in 10 days what would normally take at least 20 to 24 days, demonstrating Ghana Gas’ efficiency and commitment.

According to the Minister, the successful completion of the works will enable the company to scale up production to about 120 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd).

He described the boost in output as a “game-changer” that will help cut costs, stabilize power generation, and guarantee reliable gas supply for industrial use.

He further disclosed that government is working towards establishing a second gas processing plant to expand delivery capacity and drive industrialization.

The Minister also highlighted positive developments in the upstream petroleum sector, including new oil and gas discoveries by Eni, progress made by Jubilee partners, and renewed interest from international oil companies.

These, he said, signal a strong rebound in the sector and form part of a wider turnaround strategy to “reset Ghana Gas on a stronger footing.”

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Madam Judith Adjobah Blay, provided an update on the progress of the maintenance works. She explained that five days into the exercise, the company had already exceeded its target.

“We started on August 16 and plan to bring the plant back on by the 26th. At the midway point, we had aimed for about 40 to 45 percent completion, but I’m glad to announce we have achieved about 50 percent. All of us are here 24/7 ensuring that the plant is restored for power generation and industrial use,” she said.

Madam Blay added that Ghana Gas is ready to undertake the next phase of expansion, known as GPP2, as soon as government gives the green light.
