Central Regional Director for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), E.K Deawuo Mensah, has called on miners in Upper Denkyira and surrounding areas to collaborate in covering abandoned galamsey pits.
During the launching of the land reclamation project at Upper East Denkyira on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, he assured that covering the pits is just the beginning, as the government plans to provide seedlings and economic tree crops to miners, encouraging them to adopt sustainable livelihoods through tree planting.
“After we cover all the pits, that won’t be the end; we will provide seedlings, economic tree crops like cocoa, rubber, oil palm and other economic crops so that they plant in order for it to serve as an alternative livelihood work for miners,” he reaffirmed.
Mr. Mensah further noted that the team is set to conduct community and stakeholder engagements prior to commencing the reclamation exercise.
