Prof. Alidu Mahama Seidu has been elected as the Parliamentary Candidate for Tamale Central in the parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He garnered 840 votes out of the total votes counted to secure victory in the fiercely contested exercise held Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.
Prof. Alidu beat 11 other contenders, including three women, to secure the slot to represent the NDC in the by-election slated for Tuesday, September 30 in the Tamale Central Constituency.
Abdul Hannan Gundado was the candidate with the second highest votes of 536 followed by Dr. Seidu Fiter Mohammed with 44 votes.
The rest are Ing. Aliu Abdul Hamid who had 23 votes, Alhassan Mbalba 10 votes, and 9 votes each for Dr. Abdul Rahaman Rashid and Sadat Haruna.
Alhassan Osman Gomda (Naa Simani) had 7 votes, Shamima Yakubu and Mariama Naana Salifu also polled 5 votes each while Prof. Abdul Razak Abubakari recorded 4 with Mulaika Salisu’s 3 votes.
The primary became necessary after the death of the late Member of Parliament (MP), Alhaji Murtala Muhammed, who died in a helicopter crash with seven others.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party has announced its withdrawal from contesting the September 30 by-election, citing respect for the late MP.
