You’re a failure if your vision starts with IMF – Ken Agyapong

Presidential aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong has taken aim at fellow contenders, arguing that any blueprint for Ghana’s economic future that hinges on negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is fundamentally flawed.

According to him, leading the country to the Fund for an economic bailout should be the least a visionary leader must be thinking.

In a post shared on his official X account (formerly Twitter) the former Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) asserted that Ghana’s repeated dependence on IMF support signals weak economic planning and ineffective leadership.

“You want to lead Ghana, yet your main concern is who can negotiate best with the IMF? Let me be clear: If your vision for Ghana starts with a trip to the IMF, you have already failed,” Mr. Agyapong wrote.

He outlined his ambition to build a resilient, self-sustaining economy that would eliminate the need for IMF intervention.

“My vision is to build an economy so self-reliant and powerful that the IMF becomes irrelevant,” he stated in the post.

His remarks is widely seen as a veiled critique of his opponents within the NPP, in the lead-up to the party’s flagbearer race in January 2026 ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Among those vying for the position is former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Abeti Member of Parliament, Bryan Acheampong, Ing. Kwabena Agyapong and former Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum and just to mention a few.
