Environmental sanitation has become a serious problem in Ghana. One area particularly affected by this issue is the coastal region, specifically the beaches of Winneba.
This beautiful coastal town in Ghana’s Central Region is currently experiencing poor environmental sanitation at its beaches.
The Current State of Sanitation in Winneba
The beaches of Winneba are filled with trash and suffer from open defecation. This is not just an eyesore; it poses a serious health risk for everyone living there. The situation demands urgent attention and action from local authorities, residents, and stakeholders.
Recent studies indicate the severity of the problem. There is inadequate toilet infrastructure and improper waste disposal, which are major concerns.
The Effutu Municipal Assembly has initiated clean-up exercises to enhance sanitation in the town, but more needs to be done to address the root causes of these issues.
The poor sanitation situation in the Penkyi community has led to outbreaks of malaria, cholera, and other diseases. In August 2025, many children in this community were affected by malaria and cholera, with some tragically losing their lives.
According to Fiifi, the ssembly member for the Penkyi community, several key challenges face the community members:
Inadequate sanitation infrastructure
The Penkyi community lacks proper toilet facilities, which has resulted in open defecation and environmental pollution.
Improper waste disposal
People are dumping trash indiscriminately, making our streets and gutters dirty.
Limited awareness and education
Some residents in these coastal areas do not understand the importance of sanitation, highlighting the need for education on this topic.
How can we measure progress?
To effectively track progress and ensure the successful implementation of sanitation initiatives, the following Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) should be considered:
“How many households have access to adequate toilet facilities?
“Are people reducing instances of open defecation?
“How much waste are we collecting and disposing of properly?
“Are sufficient public toilets and sanitation facilities being constructed?
“Are residents learning to dispose of waste properly?
Steps to measure the progress stated above
“Build and Improve Sanitation Facilities, Establish public toilets and waste management systems and Educate the Community.”
Educate the residents about good sanitation practices and their importance.
Engage the Community Involve community members in decision-making processes regarding sanitation. Participation in clean-up exercises is essential.
Collaborate with stakeholders
Work alongside local authorities, residents, and private sector organisations to develop and implement effective sanitation strategies.
By collaborating to address these challenges and tracking progress through key performance indicators, the Penkyi community in Winneba can improve its sanitation situation, protect public health, and promote a cleaner, healthier environment for its residents.
