The Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for the Kwabre East District in the Ashanti Region, Hon. P.V. Obeng, has reportedly drowned in the Afiesu River at Abira.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock. Assembly Member for the area, Isaac Owusu Benpah, confirmed the news to a local journalist, expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
Details surrounding the drowning remain unclear. However, reports suggest that the deceased had been battling an undisclosed illness prior to the incident.
The news has sent shockwaves through Kwabre East, with many residents describing Mr. Obeng’s death as a significant blow to the district.
Traditional leaders (Nananom) performed rites before the body was retrieved from the river.
The area’s linguist, Nana Adu Antwi, cautioned residents against swimming or engaging in activities in the river on Tuesdays, citing traditional taboos. He eulogized Mr. Obeng as a dedicated public servant, especially during his tenure as an assembly member.
The Antoa Police Command has taken custody of the body for autopsy and further investigation.
