Deputy General Secretary of the United Party (UP), Nana Yaw Sarpong, has commended stakeholders for acknowledging the milestone of the Ghanaian Cedi.
He said the decision to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Cedi was commendable and described it as a sensible initiative.
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has rolled out a week-long celebration of the Cedi’s milestone, with a series of activities to mark the anniversary.
According to BoG, the anniversary presents a strategic opportunity to reflect on six decades of monetary sovereignty, engage the public on the history and future of the currency, and promote pride in Ghana’s financial and cultural identity.
“It is also an occasion to strengthen policy literacy, promote the Bank’s Clean Note Campaign, and inspire the next generation to appreciate and protect the integrity of the cedi”, the BoG said.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Mr. Sarpong stated that “Initially, I asked myself, why celebrate the Cedi at 60? But after some reflection, it actually makes sense. We are getting a few things right as a nation.”
He acknowledged the efforts by stakeholders and the renewed confidence in the Cedi, which has ensured its steady appreciation against the dollar in recent months.
“The welcomed ‘rain down’ of inflation. The return of investor trust in our economy. The signs of stability and steady growth,” he indicated, and called for a celebration of the progress achieved.
“Ayekoo to Ghana!!! Ayeekoo to Bank of Ghana!!! And congratulations to Dr. Johnson Pandit Kwesi Asiamah and Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson for their roles in steering this positive shift.”
He, however, admitted that despite these successes at the Bank, there is still more work ahead.
