A crackdown on illegal mining at Hwediem in the Ahafo Region turned violent over the weekend when a taskforce from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) was attacked by an angry mob.
In a video circulating on social media, showed chaotic scenes as locals confronted the anti-mining taskforce.
The confrontation reportedly stemmed from the arrest of several youths during the operation, prompting demands for their immediate release.
The NAIMOS team had allegedly stopped at a roadside mining site on their return journey to Accra when the mob descended on them.
Authorities have since launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the assault.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Addo, has been accused of orchestrating the actions of the youth.
